Our Time Together
A Tribute to Butch - by Matt Shook

Butch Singo (July 14, 1949-Dec.13, 2008)

In January of 1985, I went to a superintendent meeting up in Jacksonville , FL.   By chance, I happened to sit down beside a guy
by the name of Butch Singo.  The first thing I noticed was that he actually said a prayer of thanks before he ate.
Noticing this, I inquired about his faith
to which he eagerly responded!  It was obvious that Butch was a man of
tremendous faith and he was never ashamed to share his faith in Christ.

He became a valuable friend to me taking me under his wing that very first day, since I had just begun my career in sales.
Over the years, our friendship grew.  He was instrumental in my decision to work with Vigoro and again later
when we came together to work for Harrell’s.

Butch was a competitor in everyway.  He loved to compete in sports, as in his professional career.  He excelled in
sales with Harrell’s and for years was one of the top Sales Reps in the company.  Butch has been awarded the
Jack Harrell, Sr. Lifetime Achievement Award as well as various industry awards such as The Wreath of Grass and the
Larry Kamphaus Award.   He had a passion for professional sports, especially his beloved Steelers.

Butch loved to play many sports as well, including:  golf, racquetball, basketball and even ping pong!  He loved people
and took a genuine interest in them.  This was a primary reason for his successful sales career.  His clients knew he
truly wanted the best for them.

He was loyal as a friend and was always ready to lend a hand if you needed it.  He was always the first one to offer
encouragement and he saw the potential of each individual
, encouraging them to reach for the stars!  He was positive
in life and even in the darkest days of his illness, he didn’t look upon his own situation with anger or resentment.

As I look back at the many years with Butch I am saddened with the loss, but inspired by his life and how he
approached it.  I know I am a better person for knowing Butch Singo!  In the true spirit of Butch, I believe that he
would issue each of us this same challenge:  To live a life of faith and encouragement that makes a lasting impact and
positive influence on the people in each of our individual lives . . .

Butch was a long time Board Member with the North Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association
and Committee Chairman for Meeting Sites.

Rest In Peace Butch, you will be greatly missed by our Association and all your friends.
